West Hartford's
most famous resident was Noah Webster, author of the first American dictionary.
In 1783, he penned his first textbook, "A Grammatical Institute of the English Language,"
nicknamed the "Blue-backed Speller" because of its blue cover. For a century, the
Blue-backed Speller taught countless children to read, spell and properly pronounce
words.
"Noah Webster stitched the fabric of our American national identity together - not
with laws or guns or roads - but with words."
